Regulations
1 – Two prizes have been instituted with the aid of the Arenberg foundations to encourage greater and more widespread knowledge of the history and culture of the European continent.
2 – A prize of 4,000 Euro for works of a general nature, intended for a wide public. Such works, of a historical nature, will focus particularly on the former Seventeen Provinces of the Low Countries, the Holy Roman Empire of the Germanic Peoples (Rhineland and Westphalia in particular) and the region of northern France.
3 – A prize of 1,000 Euro for research work of a more specialised nature, based mainly on the Arenberg archives, which are located for the most part in Arras, Brussels, Cambrai, Coblenz, Douai, Düsseldorf, Enghien, Louvain, Osnabruick, Paris, Salzburg and Vienna.
4 – These sums are subject neither to division, nor, in the case of non-attribution, to augmentation.
5 – The two prizes are awarded every two years to Dutch, English, French or German speakers without distinction, not excluding writers in other European languages.
6 – Works submitted may be the work of one or more authors. They will usually be based on original documentation. They may take the form of books, university studies, or monographs or memoranda of a minimum of fifty pages.
7 – The assessment committee reserves the right exceptionally to reward works of literary merit (poetry or prose), musical composition, artistic creation (painting, sculpture, drawing), architectural creation, or classification or restoration of archives. In such cases the committee may act of its own initiative or on request.
8 – An assessment committee is appointed to select the candidates. The composition and mode of operation thereof are determined by specific regulations.
9 – Candidates for the prizes shall send two copies of their work. These must be typed or printed and must carry the name, title, address and telephone number of the author.
10 – All documents to be submitted by virtue of the preceding article shall be addressed to the Secretariat before 31 January of the year in which the prize is awarded.
11 – The members of the assessment or publishers may propose candidates for the prizes on their own initiative, within the same deadlines as those for the submissions by candidates.
12 – The assessment committee reserves the right to keep copies of the works referred to in article 9, and to publish them if it sees fit.
13 – The assessment committee may if it wishes request the assistance of eminent specialists in particular fields with a view to the appreciation of the quality of the works submitted.
14 – All cases not covered by these regulations shall be decided by the assessment committee after consultation with the Arenberg foundations.
15 – The prizes shall be presented at the time and place of the assessment committee's choosing, generally during the month of September.
